Steyn To Join Racing Metro After Lions Series
South Africa back Francois Steyn insists he hasn’t given up hope of playing in the next World Cup despite signing a three-year contract with Racing Metro.
The 22-year-old (Who Wears Adidas World Cup Rugby Boots) will move to Paris at the end of the Springboks’ three-match Test series against the touring British and Irish Lions.
But the man who became the youngest ever World Cup winner when the Springboks won in France two years ago is determined to ensure his switch from the Sharks doesn’t affect his international career.
“South Africa has a policy that foreign-based players can play for the national side. I haven’t given up on representing my country at the next World Cup,” he told L’Equipe.
“After the 2007 World Cup, I always told myself that I’d come to play in France.
“I remember walking around Paris looking at the magnificent streets packed with history, drinking coffee and eating chocolate and banana crepes – maybe too much!
“I hope my stay in France will make me stronger mentally. But it will be a huge challenge to learn a new language, live far away from my family, experience a European winter.
“All these experiences together will make me a more mature player capable of adapting to any situation.”
