Standing out at the weekend – Marvel Special
The NRL had a comic book theme to it this weekend with five teams wearing superhero themed shirts. The Sea Eagles, Cowboys, Roosters, Dragons and Raiders teamed up with Marvel to create shirts inspired by some of the world’s most famous comic book heroes.
The Sea Eagles kicked off the weekend on Friday in their Wolverine shirts. On Saturday, the Thor inspired Cowboys took on the Gold Coast Titans at the 1300 Smiles Stadium. This was followed by the clash of the superheroes as Captain America went up against Iron Man or in NRL terms, the Roosters took on the Dragons. The final superhero in action was Hulk in the form of the Raiders.
A Win for Wolverine
Ironically the Manly Sea Eagles Wolverine shirt features three slashes across the chest and this happens to be the same as the number of tries they managed against the Broncos in a 16-4 victory. The Sea Eagles currently sit top of the NRL and with four wins on the bounce, it is no wonder they are considered favourites to lift the Provan-Summons trophy.
Thor Overcomes the Titans
Jonathan Thurston carried the Mjolnir on Saturday as he dealt crushing blow after crushing blow against the Titans. The North Queensland Cowboys co-captain scored 12 (1 try, 4 conversions) of the teams 28 points and helped them to a third win in a row. The other tries were scored by Morgan, Cooper, Moga and Linnett.
Captain America Overpowers Iron Man
Did Michael Jennings take Super Solder Serum before the game on Saturday? Probably not. But he performed like he did. The returning centre scored two tries for the Roosters as they secured a 30-22 win over the Dragons. Conceding 22 points isn’t too good for a team bearing indestructible shields.
Hulk Smashed by the Warriors
The Raiders were more Bruce Banner than Incredible Hulk against the Warriors as they went down 18 points to 54 in Canberra. The visitors crossed for ten tries in all with Manu Vatuvei grabbing a hat-trick. If the Raiders want to get away from the bottom of the NRL ladder then they need to take on some of the Hulks superhuman attributes.
