Standing out at the weekend

Latest Rugby News from Lovell Rugby

Super Rugby returned over the weekend and once again we were treated to high tempo rugby with plenty of tries. The stand out fixture of the weekend came in Sydney where the Waratahs and Brumbies went head-to-head.

On the international scene, South Africa took on Scotland in their last game before the 2014 Rugby Championship which kicks off in mid-August. A game that some of you may have missed, took place in Lautoka where Fiji went up against the Cook Islands for a place in the 2015 Rugby World Cup. Down under in the NRL, the Roosters looked to continue their winning run when they visited the Sea Eagles on Friday.

Check out below some of our highlights from the weekend.

Alofa Alofa, so good they named him twice

A 39-8 win over the Brumbies on Saturday was enough for the Waratahs to secure the Australian Conference title and leave themselves sitting pretty at the top of the Super Rugby table. They scored five tries in total, with two of those coming from Rugby League convert Alofa Alofa.

The 23-year-old, who moves to Top 14 new boys La Rochelle at the end of the season, was sporting a pair of the new Nike Magista Opus boots.

Future looks promising for South Africa

Just over a week after representing his country in the JWC Final, Junior Player of the Year Handre Pollard was making his international debut against Scotland. He helped the side to a 55-6 victory over Scotland and contributed 13 points from his boot. The future certainly looks promising for the Springboks.

It has been a successful start for South Africa in their new Home Shirt after recording wins over a World XV and Wales in recent weeks.

Fiji heading to the 2015 RWC

England will take on Fiji in the opening fixture of the Rugby World Cup next year after the Fijians 17 try win over the Cook Islands at the weekend. The hosts managed to score a staggering 108 points to the visitors 6 and amassed an impressive 13 tries in the second half.

Fiji took to the pitch in their 2013/14 Home Shirt which features a shaded palm tree across the body.

On Friday the Sea Eagles managed to avenge the 8-0 loss at the Allianz Stadium earlier in the season by defeating the Roosters 24-16. The home side scored four converted tries which helped them take an outright lead at the top of the NRL ladder. A 78th minute try from Peta Hiku sealed the win.

SBW caught our eye during the game after finally ditching his Solar Blue adidas RS7 Rugby Boots and moving in to the new Solar Red colourway.
