Having only needed to reach the semi-finals, a feat New Zealand had achieved in every round of Sevens Rugby already this season, the men in black were always going to be overwhelming favourites to retain their World Sevens title going into the penultimate round of the 2013 competition.

With Scotland the spiritual home of Sevens Rugby, it was South Africa who emerged victorious and claimed their third Cup Final of the season. Even more rewarding was that the 28-21 win came against the newly crowned Sevens World Series Champions, New Zealand, who themselves have only claimed one Cup Final trophy this year.

With New Zealand claiming their 11th World Series title earlier in the day, simply by reaching the semi-finals, they were unable to add further silverware against an inspired South Africa side who now sit second in the series standings. Elsewhere and there was plenty to contest in the Third Place Final as arch rivals England and Wales contested a thrilling match which resulted in a narrow 24-21 victory for the men in white.

Whilst all the attention was focused on the title, there was also plenty to play for at the other end of the table as the likes of Canada, Scotland, USA and Portugal all faced relegation woes going into the weekend. Things are a bit more clear cut now but Scotland, Portugal and Spain still occupy the relegation spots going into the final tournament next week.

The USA and Argentina contested the Plate Final with the North Americans emerging victorious 17-7 whilst in the Bowl Final Australia defeated Kenya 12-5 in a low scoring affair. Rounding up the honours and France beat Russia 21-17 to claim the Shield Final.
