Sackey Ruled out for England Summer Tour Of Argentina
England wing Paul Sackey has been ruled out of the summer tour to Argentina due to a broken leg.
The Wasps finisher aggravated an injury two weeks ago playing against Bristol and a scan has revealed he faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
“I have broken my fibula. I had a slight crack in it beforehand, obviously going into the Ireland game and I hadn’t played up until the Bristol game just two weeks ago,” he said, speaking to Sky Sports News.
“I played in that game because I was sort of told… if I did play in it and got through it without any problems, then I could be involved with the Lions.”
The 22-times capped Sackey admitted it was a gamble to play against Bristol but believed it would further his touring chances.
“It was one of those Catch 22 situations. I knew my leg wasn’t 100 per cent but I still had five weeks to get ready for the Lions, if selected,” he added.
“So I took the gamble, played in it, first tackle, two minutes in, I knew that it wasn’t right and I have just had a scan today and an X-Ray and I have broken my fibula, so…
“I am bitterly disappointed, I am gutted. Maybe if I had not played in that game I might have been on stand-by for the Lions or have gone on the Argentina tour.
But Sackey is determined to return better than ever after his lengthy lay-off.
“I always look at it that everything happens for a reason,” he said.
“Maybe I need a break from rugby for a little bit, just chill out and relax and get my focus back and come back stronger and fitter and faster hopefully for next season. So I sort of take a positive out of it, if there is one.”
