Rugby Match Preview: Barbarians vs Australia – Wednesday December 3rd 2008
The world famous Barbarians Rugby Football club will play the Touring Australian rugby team at Wembley stadium on Wednesday December 3rd. The match is to celebrate the 1908 Olympic Rugby Union centenary match which Australia won.
The match rugby shirt worn by the Barbarians for the special one off match is being made by Adidas who have launched an exclusive range for the game that includes the replica classic black and white hooped rugby shirt, rugby polo shirt and a t-shirt. All garments feature the special embroidery and printed textcelebrating the special rugby match and the 100 years since Australia’s 1908 victory.
The Barbarians have named one of their strongest squads in modern day rugby with players eager to be part of the celebration and play in the now revamped famous stadium. The game looks set to feature a strong squad coached by South Africa’s World Cup Winning coach Jake White. The lineup includes world class players such as Percy Montgomery, Joe Rockocoko, Bryan Habana, Shane Williams, All Blacks Captain Richie McCaw and Jerry Collins with more to be named after premiership clubs have agreed to feature players who are invited to play.
The Barbarian Football Club, typically referred to as Barbarians and nicknamed the “Baa-Baas”, is an invitational rugby union team based in Britain. The Barbarians play in traditional black and white hoops, although players retain the rugby socks from their “home” club strip.
Membership is by invitation only and the only qualifications considered when issuing an invitation are that the player’s rugby is of a high enough standard. Being asked to become a Barbarian is an honour and not only restricted to British players. Traditionally one uncapped player is selected for each match.
