Rugby Boot Spotting – Worldwide
Last weekend saw the the start of both the Rugby Championship (formerly the Tri-Nations) and the Top 14 in France. New Zealand and South Africa both started their campaigns off with wins over Australia and Argentina respectively. In the Top 14, there were wins for Biarritz, Racing Metro, Stade Francais, FC Grenoble, Clermont Auvergne, Toulon and Toulouse.
There have been a wide variety of boots on show with players switching boots and colour ways. Morne Steyn has switched from the Nike Mercurial Vapors to the Nike Tiempo Legends whilst Dan Carter has opted for an alternate colour way in the new Adidas Predator Incurza. Steffon Armitage ran out for Toulon in the latest RS7 II colour way, Flip van der Merwe wore a pair of Mizuno Wave Ignitus 2s and Stade Francais hooker Remi Bonfils opted for a pair of Asics Gel Lethal Hybrid 3 boots.
The Springboks fly half has been wearing Nike Mercurial boots since 2009, however opted for the Tiempo Legends in Saturday’s game with Argentina. The Tiempo’s have a kangaroo leather upper which moulds around the wearers foot so we expect he finds this more comfortable to kick in.
Plays for: Crusaders and New Zealand
Carter had been wearing the black/royal/lime colourway since the Incurza was released, however he has been wearing the silver/black/red boots since the end of the Super XV season. The boot has been designed for those who place kick, as it has a 5mm heel wedge to help you maintain a better running/striking position
Puma v1.11 boots and the Adidas adiZero RS7 boots were the preferred option for Armitage last season, however he went for the latest RS7 II to begin this season in. A number of back row forwards are now opting for this particular boot due to it being one of the lightest boots on the market.
Flip van der Merwe
Not many players wear the Wave Ignitus 2 boots, although the boots are very much suited for a second row forward like van der Merwe. The boot has a K leather upper and an 8 stud sole plate so the wearer has a boots which would mould to their foot and not be uncomfortable when scrummaging.
Plays for: Stade Francais
We expect Bonfils decided on the Gel Lethal Hybrid 3 boots as they feel like your playing in trainers when you wear them. The design of the boot is based on that of the Asics running shoes and they also have additional cushioning in all directions which helps to stabilise the foot during heel contact.
