Latest Rugby News from Lovell Rugby

Prior to the 2014 6 Nations had we said that an England player would be chosen as our Player of the Tournament then quite a few eyebrows would have been justifiably raised. With Wales playing host to a number of Test winning Lions, the safe money would have been on one of their players to gain all the plaudits but we were certainly proved wrong as Mike Brown almost single handedly lifted the trophy.

With just 20 caps to his name prior to the competition, Brown was actually one of the more experienced players in the England squad and his impact was immediate. What a difference five matches can make on the international scene as the Harlequins full back went from squad member to number one on Stuart Lancaster’s team sheet.

With the 2015 Rugby World Cup getting ever closer, the next twelve months are crucial for any player wishing to be selected for the greatest tournament on the rugby calendar. Club form is no longer good enough to earn an international jersey, you have to perform on the big stage when it matters and there is no denying that Brown has made the number fifteen shirt his own after a stunning run of form in the 6 Nations.

Action speaks louder than words and stats top them both, so what better way to showcase Brown’s activity on the field this tournament than with this great infographic the Lovell Rugby team have created.

Prior to the competition Brown had not scored for England but come the end he finished as joint top try scorer with four to his name. Having played in all but two minutes of action across five games, Brown also topped the tables for most metres gained, defenders beaten and clean breaks which resulted in three man-of-the-match awards. No other player received so much champagne come the final whistle although we are sure he would have swapped all the stats for the title which England came so close to winning.

With a summer tour of New Zealand to look forward to, Brown will be facing a strong test against the world’s best and a series of matches which can only strengthen his all-round ability. On the domestic scene, Harlequins are chasing a top four place and the play-offs so there is no letting up for the 28 year old as he attracts further attention every time he steps onto the field.

You too can kit yourself out like the England number fifteen with our Mike Brown Player Collection, where you will find all the kit that Brown wears for both club and country as well as on the training ground.
