Interview with Tom Varndell
Making a name for himself as one of the fastest wingers in world rugby as well as a try scoring machine, Tom Varndell needs little introduction as his opponents and team-mates will certainly testify.
Top try scorer in the Aviva Premiership last season, Varndell now has one eye on becoming the leagues all time leading try scorer whilst continuing to press for a return to the senior England squad. Just as impressive though is his choice of boots for the new season as he laces up the X Blades Sniper ST Bionic for a combination of devastating looks and performance on the rugby field.
Slightly out of breath, Lovell Rugby managed to catch up with the Wasps wing to discuss his choice of footwear, sprinting and new signings.
How long have you been wearing X Blades boots for?
I’ve only just joined X Blades this season and have played just one game in them so far.
Which style of X Blades will you be wearing this season?
I’ve gone for the super lightweight Sniper Speed boot style.
What do you look for in a pair of boots?
I like a boot that is lightweight but is protective for my feet, durable and looks good. My boots need to stand out and I like bright colours.
Do you have any favourite colours when it comes to boots?
Bright white is a go to but any colour besides plain black is fine by me.
Any advise for young players?
Practice, never be happy to just get by and always have a desire to be the best in your chosen game. Practice and perfect your skills, then when it matters in the big games you can perform to the best of your ability.
Who is the toughest winger you have faced in your career?
I played against Lote Tuquiri when I was 19 years old, down in Australia, when I was capped for England. He was by far the toughest opponent I’ve come up against as I was very young and he was an established player who taught me a few lessons.
Who is quicker between yourself and Christian Wade?
We’ve both clocked the same 10 metre acceleration time but I got a slightly quicker 30 and 40 metre sprint.
What are London Wasps aims for the upcoming season?
Top 6 finish is the aim for the team and hopefully pick up some silverware. For me personally, it is to play for England again and finish top Aviva Premiership try scorer.
Any new signings impressed you more than others?
Very impressed with back row signings Ed Jackson and Guy Thompson, they have been brilliant through pre-season and game one of the new season.
Funniest thing you have ever seen on a rugby pitch?
It always makes me smile when you see props out in the wide channels during a game. On one particular occasion, one of our props Ben Broster a couple of seasons ago for Wasps, found himself one-on-one with only the fullback to beat. Instead of running straight over him, he tried to do a chip and chase but sadly it was the worst chip ever performed and actually ended up going straight into the crowd and backwards from where he kicked it.
I love a medium rare steak and chips with an apple crumble desert.
